How to Measure Your Blood Pressure

Follow these simple steps for an accurate reading

Sit quietly with both feet flat on the floor and your back supported. Rest your arm on a table or cushion at chest level. Avoid caffeine, exercise, or smoking for 30 minutes before measuring.

Place the blood pressure cuff on your bare upper arm (not over clothing). The cuff should be snug but not tight - you should be able to fit one finger underneath.

Sit quietly and relax for 3 minutes before taking your first reading.

Take your first blood pressure reading. Do not talk while the cuff is inflating or deflating. What was your first reading?

Rest quietly for 1 minute before taking your second reading.

Take your second blood pressure reading. Do not talk during the measurement. What was your second reading?
